The TZOLK’IN is the mayan sacred 260 days calendar. It’s composed by two combined elements:
-
- The 13 numbers, also called tones or intentions, form a 13 days repetitive cycle which is called trecena and is the symbolic “week”of the TZOLK’IN,
-
-The 20 day glyphs, each of them representing a symbol with a profound signification for the maya.
We’ll speak here of the 20 day glyphs.
The day glyphs have different pronunciations according to the Mayan dialects. The glyphs names used in the pages of this website are the Yucatec names. The table below gives the equivalences between Yucatec and K’iche’ names (if you have other sources, just tell me ...)..
DAY GLYPHS NAMES IN YUCATEC AND KICHE MAYAN DIALECTS
The 20 day glyphs are personality archetypes. They are fundamental in Mayan astrology and in astrology of all Mesoamerican peoples from central Mexico to Honduras. All the ancient Mayas had the day glyph of the day of thier birth as part of their first name.
In essence, they are the equivalent of our 12 astrological signs.
The purpose of this page is to give a quick look on each day glyph, without going into the intricacies of the myths associated with or the practice of Mayan astrology which will be detailed in others pages.
These Day Glyph “quick looks” are made from several cross referenced, mixed and synthetised sources :
-
-The Daily Tzolk’in from mayanmajix.com website,
-
-The book “Jaguar Wisdom” and the eponymous blog of Kenneth Johnson (see the books and links page),
-
-The book “How to practice Mayan Astrology” of Bruce Scofield et Barry C. Orr and the Tzolkin Explorer website which used this book contents.
-
-the french e-book “le calendrier Tzolkin” from mayamajix.com website
